Sugar mills in Punjab have started crushing to enable growers to clear the fields for sowing wheat, but they have not started harvesting at a large scale.
Stating this in a statement issued here on Friday, Pakistan Sugar Mills Association's Punjab branch chairman Javed Kayani said the sugar industry had started crushing season on the demand of growers.
However, a large number of mills had reported to the association that they were not receiving sufficient supplies of sugarcane and remained for a number of hours everyday which was adding to the financial costs and overheads.
He called upon the growers not to hold harvesting in the hope of escalation of prices and bring sufficient quantities.
